Irish Lotto Ads

Bears3 are a series of short films created by Matt Everitt and myself. The animated films use dialogue from Ricky Gervais’s radio show and featured on his website, as well as many industry sites, youtube, google video and our own personal websites. In short they proved very popular.

Well, recently we became aware of a high profile set of television commercials in Ireland for the Irish Lotto:

Hopefully this still says enough, but the animation style, character traits and direction really help, see ours here:

And the Lotto here:

Whadya reckon?

For ERP software initiative , you need to get buy in. Determine your target audience. You need to determine who the key stakeholders are (decision makers, decision influencers, etc.). You should understand as much as possible about them including business drivers, interests, issues and challenges, history with the legacy software, etc. Determine the desired media for the delivery of the value proposition. For example, does the target audience expect a report, a presentation, or both? You need to understand the best way in which to deliver the value proposition. The report should include as a minimum the value model documents for each program.

    Ah, yes but.
Do we all remember the Guinness ad? The one with the silly dance and the sax music – waiting for the head to settle?

That was a complete rip of a pitch to the agency at the time. They denied it of course, despite the actor we see in the ads claiming he’d been shown the pitch video to rehearse from.

Don’t spend your compensation yet, lads……

PLEASE!! this is such an obvious rip off of bears3! note the similarities:
-first bears in each one round head, the other two square
-Facial expressions on each one are the same
    - similar colors and animation stlye

Hell! the windows in the lotto add have similar colors to the bkground!

I couldn’t begin to imagine how many people I could accuse you of ripping off with your very generic bear designs. You can complain when you’ve created something original, something that your website content lacks.

I think that the Lotto ads rip off the bears and Teletubbies. The head-to-body size ratio is just the shape of nearly every ‘cute’ character in the world. The Katamari thing is a little accidental in this case, I think.

Anon, there are references grown ups draw from that are more than a year old.

  13. Anonymous 03/13/2007 10:47 pm

I think the irish lads look more like the prince and cousins from katamari damacy, myself. They DO have the same eyebrows but really now…. theres more than 2 sets of big head – small body characters in the world.

you probably both ripped off katamari

  14. idiot boy 02/05/2007 1:53 pm

They have been shown at the OneDotZero festival all over the world.
You can find them in the Pictaplasma characters in motion DVD and book which, if you’re a creative, is a must have bit of inspiration.
They have been viewed over 30,000 times on
They use the voices of an internet phenomenon and the creators of probably the most critically acclaimed and popular comedy series in recent years.

“and he went on to describe Bears 3 as an ‘obscure piece of animation that had never been broadcast…”

When I read that I wanted to puke, the nerve of the guy. He should be stabbed to death with his own sunglasses.

It wasn’t so obscure that this bunch braying assholes came across it.

Lawyers acting on behalf of Brown Bag have forced the moderators on to close down any topics discussing the matter.

This usually means that the wheels of justice are being greased………..

  17. Helly 01/31/2007 12:46 pm

    How obvious could it be?

I remember seeing the Bears on Gervais site ages ago and really liking them. I knew having seen the Lotto adds that they looked familiar, but until i read this blog the other day the penny didnt drop.

Today this story is in a Dublin freesheet called Metro with a decent sized write up. The co founder of Brown Bag the production company that made the add is quoted as saying ‘In 12 years of business we have never been accused of anything’ and he went on to describe Bears 3 as an ‘obscure piece of animation that had never been broadcast…’

Well after 12yrs, they have finally been caught out and rightly so as it is such a blatant rip off it is laughable. The National lottery spokesperson is quoted as saying ‘I find these remarks distressing, we have not received any complaint regarding the use of these advertisements’

My response is GET AFTER THEM ad the adds suck and i am fed up seeing them on TV :)

  18. Anonymous 01/24/2007 6:11 pm

The bears are better. Even though it is somewhere obvious to me that they were the inspiration for the lotto ad, they didn’t do a very good job of it. Sad that the ‘creatives’ behind the ads are anything but.

  19. Typical 01/24/2007 1:40 pm

Bet you the guys in the irish agency have just stopped high fiving each now!

  20. Mark 01/22/2007 7:21 pm

That sucks Matts. Is there any way you can sue the bastards ?

  21. b.s. 01/21/2007 11:17 pm

the ads look more like ripoff katamari damacy characters than bears…

  22. Matt Clark 01/20/2007 1:11 am

    Hopefully fixed now.

  23. Snarky 01/19/2007 11:00 pm

Just so you know, both of those links are for the same video. At least that is what is happening for me. I would like to see the bears video as well. You were right in saying that seeing the animation style and character traits in video would help. As it stand now, I see the similarities, but I wouldn’t go so far as calling it a rip.
