OK 101% Unhappy!!

My very good friends @ OK101 have had one of their main logos
totally ripped off by one of Target’s own clothing brands “Maxx”.

The OK101 logo was designed in 2002 for there clothing label which
has been around since the late 90′s. It’s been used for all kinds of different
product and promotion including stickers, t-shirt designs, embroideries,
website (http://www.area101.com.au), flyers, books, paintings,
the list goes on….

OK101 (The Original!)

Target Maxx (The RIP OFF!)

on Target’s Site

The bad thing about this rip is that Target’s pricing & lesser quality
is competing with OK101′s original product which is still selling in stores.

In know its well in the past now, but I only just found youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com.
I can advise that ok101 managed to get a 5 figure settlement out of this and not from Target but from the development company behind this product. As noted there was a large series mens of items for the MAXX range for Target developed using this logo.
Over and above the settlement figure, product was recalled from the stores, and items in development were stopped and logos were removed or printed over for example. Some product simply had to be trashed.
Most importantly here. The graphic designer who blatantly ripped this logo was was found out for this and some other copyright issues. Worst of all we found emails between her and friend/boyfriend that she was well aware and thought she was being a rebel. DICK.
So she was fired as a result, though she had just given notice to resign at a similar time.

On the companies behalf, they had put the logo through to register copyright/IP and had no objections. But I guess when you have silly staff that lie, you’re going to get caught out.

The manufacturers should be held accountable. They are the ones who originally sold their “fashion range” to Target. The young mens buyer of Target whould not have a clue that a brand like this existed in the first place. They are under the asumption that they are receiving original or copyright safe work from their clients…that is what they are paying for.

  3. levi 05/19/2008 1:01 pm

yeah, Target sucks. but you know you’ll go back there to buy their 4.99 tees.

  4. gobots 05/07/2008 5:11 am

They are attempting to acccess the “youth market”, its fluroworld in there, bad rips of any style. But this logo is a direct rip off from ok101s brand.

  5. Jayar 05/05/2008 10:49 am

i hear that this target brand is generally covered in cumstains anyway.

seriously, did they think no one would notice?

  6. bennie raw 05/03/2008 3:06 am

That’s wrong of target to do that…
There is a slight variation on “their” but not enough for target/maxx to warrant their own copyright on the logo… its a direct bite… they’d have a hard time denying that.
I feel sorry for anyone who believes that this is the way to behave.
Anyone who believes that ” good artists copy, great artists steal…” crap is sub-human.
Good artists don’t copy, great artists don’t steal.
True artists innovate which is what kab and sooz have been doing for 15 years or so !!
It just proves that the people in the position to innovate, design or market at target/ maxx, clearly have the “piece of paper”, but no skills, respect or imagination of their own to create something unique.
The corporate engine eats another soul, them perish under the mono-culturalistic , bland and disrespectful banner of capitalism…
Meanwhile my bredren and sistas rise against the negativity and sly minds to shine for the people who like them, have integrity, respect and honour.

Kabuki 101, Sooz, Big jim, skeleton key crew… all adelaide massive, keep tabs on this revolting development.
Stealing is no excuse for meeting a product design deadline… poor effort by Target, they wilt.

    bennie scraw out

Target need to be taken down and publically shamed. They have and are currently taking the most valuable asset of a super talented and original contributor/artist/designer and flogging it to the masses under the guise of their own genius. If only the YNGRBLS buying it knew what they were actually wearing they might think twice about handing over that $39. OK101 have worked hard for years – the old fashioned way – to create what has now been stolen from under them. Where to go forward for them now? Target – you are a joke.

Tranformers? Transform my butt. Go get a job at Target.

  8. havachat 05/02/2008 10:27 pm

    Far from impressed Target’

You have offically prevented me from stepping foot in one of your stores again

  9. Matt 05/02/2008 4:25 pm

Thanks nomad for the email address.

This is a solid rip of OK 101′s work and Target should be ashamed.

  10. nomad 05/02/2008 11:35 am

    hahahahaha. check this out:

But yeah, seriously, that sucks the big one.

  11. Alli 05/02/2008 11:12 am

    KOAN…….Angry much?

  12. tobe82 05/02/2008 10:53 am

Good luck… get some legal advice, demand compensation for design and for every piece sold… take them to the cleaners!

  13. BLASKO ONE 05/02/2008 10:30 am

That’s totally wack dude. I would be pissed 2!! They’ve got some explaining 2 do. Do ur homework, ur a smart fella & go KICK THEIR ASS!!

  14. iMerda 05/02/2008 9:34 am

Just got back from my local Target store…

  15. blotchwoman 05/02/2008 8:54 am

i have experienced a similar rip-off by Mambo. They were very shifty when i tried to get compensation and tried to blame a 3rd party (designer)as responsible but then would not give me the details of that designer. sue big time and good luck.

  16. gobots 05/02/2008 7:02 am

get back on topic – **** the tranformers. Why dont you smoke optimus prime!
Target is the issue not someones fantasy about resemblance about some wak toy cartoon.

  18. Guy 05/02/2008 4:45 am

Target has a history of ripping of people, but they have more money than you so I guess that makes it OK

  19. KOAN 05/02/2008 4:15 am

Transformers logo? Are you blind or stupid?

Youthoughtwewouldntnotice is a site for highlighting actualy cases of plagerism.

It isn’t a Rorschach text for the mentally underdeveloped.

Lafinjack, if you want to point out things that kind of look like other things why don’t you get your minder to take you out to a field so you can stare at clouds all day, once she’s finished cleaning baby food off your chin that is.

Kab, you’ve got a solid case here. rip em a new now.

  20. dL 05/02/2008 3:57 am

Weak as piss. The so-called designer should hang up their mouse. I’d like to see the YNG RBLS who approved the design publicly flogged and anyone who honestly believes the OK 101 mark is similar to Transformers in any way other than it being slightly mask-like, should have their right-to-post-on-a-design-comparison-forum revoked.

  21. kristarella 05/02/2008 3:39 am

I was going to make the transformers connection too, but these two are too similar to each other to be coincidence. I can’t believe these big chains (Supre, Target, Jay Jays) get away with this stuff.

  22. RickyDicky 05/02/2008 2:43 am

Target should be held accountable, publicly shamed, and the designer who ripped the logo sacked.
OK101 should not have to see their logo jacked by a giant outlet like Target, or suffer their logo appearing on low quality Target garments.
Target have enough funds and clout to employ good designers I would have thought,…so why are they employing thieves?

  23. Alli 05/02/2008 2:28 am

really it is similar to the transformer logo….grip gotten.

  24. perish 05/02/2008 1:57 am

Really, it’s nothin’ like the transformers logo. Get a grip….

  25. gobots 05/02/2008 1:15 am

just looked at a transformer logo and cant see any similarities, in fact that tranny logo is so lame. [not that this is the issue!] its about Target!

  26. x 05/01/2008 11:36 pm

too bad for target. they hire some lame designer to make some hollister looking clothes and this is what they get

good news for ok101 though, means there’s a lot of money to sue for.

    is this target’s own brand?

  27. Logic 05/01/2008 10:48 pm

similar to the transformer logo; maybe even uninspired to a degree, but it’s original nonetheless.

  28. Alli 05/01/2008 5:16 pm

I was thinking the exact same thing about the transformers logo….

  29. LafinJack 05/01/2008 4:22 pm

Looks like OK101 ripped off the Transformers first.

  30. daisy 05/01/2008 2:24 pm

That’s really bad. Everything is exactly the same except the tilt of the logo.

    OK101 should sue

  31. Ben Wilhelm 05/01/2008 1:38 pm

    Well that’s pretty unambiguous.

  32. Krystal 05/01/2008 1:24 pm

101% Bite! What amazes me is that not only is it a total rip – target has placed it across it’s range like a brand! Sue their ass off!
