UNIF copied badly by LARGE Holland

We at UNIF clothing came out with this Michael Kruger T back in late 2006. I was just informed through email that a site in Holland called LARGE (looks like the equivalent to Hot Topic) decided to take our creation and totally crap it up. Sizing is off, their outer glow is horrible, and oops, no sequin glove?  Good try though.  Our is at UNIF, theirs is at LARGE
Blah. Not the first and prob not the last.

The Benny Hill theme song on our site isn’t for sale…unless you want to buy it. I can make you a good deal on a song that sounds just like it.

UNIF isn’t in copywrite violation. Not everybody understands the laws but it clearly isn’t putting freddy kruger or michael jackson on a shirt. What is oringinal about it is the concept. By UNIF not blatantly using freddy’s or michael’s face or body it isn’t actually either. Like they said it is a concept of every child’s worst nightmare. It is more of an insinuation of who the image is suppose to be rather than an actual image of those characters. DUH! people don’t understand creativity. Lots of visual designers focus on the image and fail to add an actual concept to what they’re creating. Which is why tee graphics suck these days. I love the shirt. Good shit UNIF.

I understand the issue, but I just wanted to say it was also sort of funny when i go to the UNIF site and hear the Benny Hill theme song immediately after. Of course, I’ve heard it reproduced and re-used a number of times. I hope the people that blatantly ripped your shirt pull their stuff, good luck..

so funny when people rip ugly shit.

    Thank you DIRTYJAX

I see why people have a stance against my post. Let me clear this up. Yes I used Freddy Kruger, yes I used Michael Jackson. Andy Warhol used Campbell’s soup. (I am not flattering myself by comparing myself to Andy Warhol. Just making a point) Do I plan on taking Large to court? No. This has happened so many times that once I found this site I couldn’t help but put the most recent on here. I think a great part of this site is the ability to show events wherein the “little guy” gets taken by the “big guy”. So I put that to use.

yo dirtyjax you’re a dummy. you don’t know the difference between SEQUINS and a SEQUENCE. have fun being a dummy and making shirts for other dummies. lol.

Well, seeing as quite a few thing where changed, except the pose, they COULD claim they asked new line cinema permission. In wich case they WOULD have a stronger point in a courtcase.

BUT LARGE is a pop merchadising site, meaning just about everything they sell is not selfmade and comes from licencing
    and resellers

LARGE has a fairly good name when it comes to fairness. They don’t remove negative reviews of products and such.Has contact been made with LARGE and has a complaint been filed with them?
Like i stated before, they are a popmerchandizing site and rarely design anything themselves

Nope, i don’t like LARGE (to unoriginal and too expensive) or work for them.Just saying that using something that belongs to somebody else, even if it is used in a very different way, puts you in an uncertain position, legal wise.AND they might not even know a supplier stole the idea

Also, you’d have to take it to a dutch court and that will take a loooooong time :-(

    (Yes i am dutch btw)

I can’t believe the jealous nerds who are commenting AGAINST UNIF. This is a creative, original piece of art that was straight up BOOTLEGGED. I actually own this shirt and its DOPE. The sequence for the glove is a brilliant touch. Fuck the haters. Keep doing your thing.. I own a brand called DIRTYJAX and my shit just got bootlegged too. Lets see if my posting gets hated on as well.

Yeah, that’s as may be, UNIF, but the fact is that Freddy Krueger is the intellectual property of New Line Cinema. You are therefore on dodgy ground in terms of copyright, even if you acknowledge that the character is not your work. Shame on you for accusing somebody else of ripping you off when you’re using somebody else’s property in your own design.

  12. UNIF 05/12/2009 8:09 pm

Well the point wasn’t to make an original character. The point was to take two iconic images (Freddy Kruger, Michael Jackson) and create art that delivered the ultimate in child fear. It’s not like we threw Michael or Freddy on a shirt and tried to claim it was an original anything.

This isn’t the first time UNIF has been ripped-off. They create some really original clothing. LARGE bootlegged the whole composition and just forgot the punchline. Not to mention their production looks like shit….

Kind of ironic to post something about a rip of a rip of a corporate (most likely copyrighted) piece of material.

  15. hmmm 05/11/2009 6:18 pm

The level of how great the original idea is all relative. Bottom line, 2nd looks def like a rip of the 1st.

what i don’t understand is it a ripoff if your idea isn’t all that original in the first place?
