YTWWN: Possible inspiration but I would call this a rip…

I got a “friend” on Myspace that has been trying to put together a book of USPS sticker art and he posted a bulletin today about a design he submitted to threadless.com.

Looked real fishy and I instantly knew it looked eerily similiar to Sam Flores’ Fatima.

Flores’ work.

Sam Flores Cities

Noirs work.

Camden Noir Origami Dreams

Pretty sad because the kid is trying to put together what seems to be an awesome book.

Here’s a link to his myspace, www.myspace.com/dancecamdendance.

Wait, what? How is it similar?

  2. on 07 May 2008 at 7:49 pm kiki

I think this is a bit of a stretch. A cartoony girl face looking down does not make a thieft of design…

However a lot of his etsy designs are pretty thieverish…

This one is completely ripping banksy’s style

    and this one

    http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8688791

is an obvious rip-off of this original work…

muhahaha….but really….when did painting someone else’s photo make something original?

Oh I see it, pose referencing. Perhaps this should be posted more to the LJ community art_theft instead, they deal more with the discussion and reporting of petty theft and reference questioning.

I think it’s pushing it to call this a rip-off.

  5. on 07 May 2008 at 8:22 pm rek

What am I looking at? I don’t see any similarities at all.

  6. on 07 May 2008 at 8:31 pm Jess

    Not similar at all.

Suddenly now every image with a dark-haired girl looking down is copying?

  7. on 07 May 2008 at 9:01 pm geg

completely different… why do jackoffs post bullshit articles

  8. on 07 May 2008 at 11:00 pm kristarella

Not similar at all. Facing the right, crossing over hands… heaven forbid someone would draw a pose that people actually stand in!

    i need help!
i can’t find how to give this kid NEGATIVE points.

    Totally unrelated.

    Is this a joke?

    Were the wrong images uploaded?

Is it wrong that I’ve come to expect “The boy who cried RIP!” more then *actual* rips on this site?

  12. on 08 May 2008 at 1:50 pm Leopold Stotch

    Jesus this site sucks now.

  13. on 09 May 2008 at 8:04 am leopold's right

this site is sucking pretty hard lately.

Given that the follow-up post to this…which provided some needed and excellent clarification of this rip…is gone, I’d like the include the following link that presents a Sam Flores original…that shed’s a lot more light on why this rip was posted.

this is camden noir and my whole sketchbook is like this. my sketches and painting and whatnot are not stolen from sam flores. even the ideas arent stolen. the origami birds has never been done by any of the people i am “stealing” from but they are inspired.

i used pictures to develop my cutting style when i used to do stencils but i started to develop a different style and that style happens to look like sam flores and/or other artists. but i would never intentionally steal someones work and pawn it off as my own.

i hate that there is a blog posting about this because someone felt the need to make a point when there was no point in the first place.

    inspiration does not mean plagiarism…

    boring site!

  17. on 08 Jun 2008 at 11:47 am magikmarker

dyou know what, i can see what the boy is saying although it is a bit tenuous. The fact is,it is a similar format to that which flores uses, and for those familiar with his work, would see this straight away (the example given isnt the best for highlighting the plagarism).

Fact is, the illustration/street art scene is full of this, bits from here, bits from there… nods to so and so… i dont think its too much of a problem, but fair game to the guy who posted it. this is a discussion site, and i dont see why people have felt the need to abuse someone who just wants to discuss the issue. (i.e jackoff comment and ‘this site sucks), structure a better reply and someone might listen to your side of the case. i’m pretty offended on behalf of the guy who posted it.

Finally, and i dont mean to disrespect the artist, but the design is weak and doesnt merit discussing anyway. I would probably say that sam flores a) wouldnt be rightly arsed as he is one of the worlds finest illustrators and b) I wouldnt be worried about this guy making a fortune from this design

these images may highight the issue a little better but as someone said, it is a relatively universal pose… but the angles and stance is suspiciously similar

ooooh, dyou what people. go onto the guys myspace (link at the top). to be honest, theres quite alot of stuff looking a bit too much like others.
the think is, the guy has evidently got some talent, but too many of the images are similar to other artists.

i think one of the bits that makes me cautious about the guys work is the broad range of styles, many of which are similar to artists who have developed their own particular style and are focussing on exploring it.

Theres no doubt the guy is creative, just needs to play around with his own style and forget the other stuff. The number of images (for sale no less) on his site which could be some of banksy weaker pieces is a bit cheeky. but still, its all consumer choice I suppose, if someone wants to buy budget copies, then theres always a market, and you get what you pay for. theres alot of people with their own distinctive style who are selling affordable work.

vote with your feet on this one

I just think the guy could do better

My guess is this is a Flores fan troll. The real discussion is happening here: http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/blog3/?p=3818
