it seems we have a bad case of some kiwi’s given it a good ol poke.

they have released their first “collection” of sunglasses. only instead of doing something unique they decided to “take inspiration” from some of the best known sunglass designs in History. im sure that you would all notice the Original Persol 649 that was notoriously worn by Steve McQueen.

or Maybe the most well known of all the Cazal 607. worn by Run DMC!

As you can see the list goes on.

hey inspiration is one thing. but releasiing designs as your own that look VERY similar heritage sunglass designs for your debut collection is just plain silly, shame on you cassius.

well check out SUPER EYEWEAR then, they have built an ENTIRE range from knocking off the Rayban WAYFARER! and DITA’s Grand Master!

  2. on 16 Oct 2008 at 6:45 am T.Ford

I actually think the Cassius version looks better than the originals :)

dope website, cassius eyewear rocks! i really like the range – where can we buy these in the uk!!!

hey eyecaughtyou what’s your problem, why are you being so nasty anyways

  5. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:04 am dig dug

Hey at least they’re doing something cool – don’t know about that talentless comment you made, I’m guessing it takes some talent to create a brand, put together a range and get it out there internationally AND get noticed by Sportswear International (!), Antenna and Wonderland! And cool press too.

So how much talent does it take for you to write your crappy ass post??? Not much I’m guessing…

Also read their website, they talk about reviving classic silhouettes for modern consumers, and avid vintage eyewear enthusiasts. Get your facts straight before you go ripping in to people.

Shame on you dude (or dudette).

Haha, I was slightly suspicious that all the comments were positive… then I saw your little IP reveal, some nice internet detective work :D

Oh look, Cassius eyewear is based in New Zealand… and that IP is linked to “CALLPLUS-NZ” in… New Zealand!

I especially like the “where can we buy these in the UK”, from the New Zealand IP.

As always, love this blog and the unintentional hilarity derived from comments!

LOL. nice catch YTWWN, probably someone’s idea of ‘guerilla marketing’ over at Cassius.

  8. on 16 Oct 2008 at 1:58 pm Seamyst

Looks like guerrilla marketing, all right… I was originally going to suggest that they may have been posted from various people inside a school or university (as that was the case at my college; no matter which computer you posted from, the IP address was the same), but locating them in NZ with the UK comment clinches it.

    All of them are hideous.

You need to burn evil like this.

  10. on 16 Oct 2008 at 8:26 pm Dan

HAHAHA, LMAO! If your product is so lame and so obviously plagiarized that you have to pretend to be multiple people to defend it, simply because you have no fan base of your own, it may be time to throw in the towel.

even the glasses they ripped off are dumb. way to go!

  12. on 16 Oct 2008 at 10:13 pm Enforcer

    Wow….what would RUN DMC say…

Did someone really follow up IP addresses ?

  13. on 16 Oct 2008 at 11:31 pm Trizfay

It’s sunglasses, you could probably head to your local drug store and find “rip-offs” of whatever ridiculously overpriced plastic POS from your favorite designer you like best.

  14. on 19 Oct 2008 at 7:55 am Robokid

of course you could. but does that make it any better?

[...] ‘You Thought We Wouldn’t Notice’, a blog that blows the whistle on copy-cats, has called out Cassius on almost directly copying Persol and Cazal.  I still reckon Cassius’ [...]

i don’t get what the big deal is, hasn’t there been a long history of designers and labels like the first guy mentioned super and dita, of reviving old styles like rayban and persol?
i checked out their website and the eyewear actually looks pretty good. i’d buy them knock-off or not. has anyone ever considered that this is just very clever marketing?

  17. on 20 Oct 2008 at 11:16 am Robokid

yes, it’s the ancient marketing art of ‘ripping-off’.
it’s very clever. for example, this summer i was at a market, and bought some sneakers from puma and nike. only 10bucks each, because they weren’t actual puma and nike. they were perfect copies. very clever marketing trick, isn’t it?

  18. on 20 Oct 2008 at 7:37 pm Cate

haha they’re as close as you can get to replicas without taking direct moulds!
and before you mention it yes im a kiwi but not a supporter ;P

  19. on 21 Oct 2008 at 8:49 pm Mel

To all the people claiming knock-offs are nothing new, that may be so, but it’s pretty rich to rip off a classic design and then expect someone to fork out $200+ for it!! $20 maybe, but Cassius are pretending to be proper designers with a price tag to match. Lame.

  20. on 26 Oct 2008 at 3:25 pm spatch

looks like your mad you didnt do it first.

  21. on 29 Oct 2008 at 3:29 am A.Homme

I like the eyewear, as subtle as it is I can see what these guys are trying to do.
Everyone from Valentino to Versace to Vogue to Victoria Beckham has taken inspiration either directly or indirectly from something at some stage of their career.
To pay “homage” to is simply a supercilious way of saying knock-off.
I think Cassius should ignore this, once you’re in the public domain people are always going to criticize your work.

  22. on 29 Oct 2008 at 3:32 am A.Homme

PS. well done on all the press.

  23. on 07 May 2009 at 8:31 am Fe

I don’t see what the big deal is.. I think all the styles including the ones above are fab… in fashion/design/music nothing is ever completely original anymore.. EVERYTHING pays homage to something!
    Rock on Cassius
