Mark Seliger ripoff?

YTWWN:Added a few more images to help illustrate your point better.

Recently I saw this post about a book featuring mexican television company Televisa’s artists where the photographer ripped off photographer Mark Seliger, several times. The post is in spanish but you can see in the photos what it’s about. The post says the photos are credited to Gabriela Saavedra, it seems this is her site.

Damn. Just… damn. It took me a moment to understand who did what because they were so close. I don’t know if she was commissioned to make photos that look like Seliger’s but if not, that is just bad.

It looks to me like she’s paying homage to Seliger, and credit may have conveniently missed where due, maybe? It’s too blatant not to be, and she seems like a pretty talented photograper regardless.

    i don’t think its a homage.
not in the least. how can you have a homage without giving credit to your source? it would be the number one priority if that were the case.
its about time that we had some legit rips.
    kudos.

@ Janet Twizzle… really? you think are close? the rip off pictures are subpar IMO. It’s embarrasing to see a fellow mexican photographer do this. But I guess she was out of creativity, so she went for this… and she thought we wouldn’t notice ;)

I think that if this was not the photographers idea, it must be from the ones who asked for the job. A lot of clients like to get a photographer, designer, architect in Mexico and ask the make the job exactly like the other artist they like. So, who was the one with the idea to rip a great photographer?

Televisa should get sued. They are very fast when somebody else uses his material.

This is embarrassing. Truly embarrassing. Like anything else Televisa does.

it is sad in a way that she lacks the creativity to execute her own ideas and it is more than obvious that she used his work but.. it is not a copyright infringement per se, because she is copying the ”idea” (sure they look very similar but they are still not the same photo)

as a mexican photographer it is embarrassing to see this happening a lot, not only in photography but the whole thing of buying north american shows and just solely reproducing them. you could say in a way it is a lousy copy of the original,
the only illegal part comes to play if mark seliger decides to sue her.

This company is the biggest TV Network in Mexico. They are specialist in ripping off ideas from all over the world.

you can’t copyright a pose. maybe she’s ripping off his ideas and that’s not very creative but it’s legal.

Hey, I’m always looking at other photographers’ work for ideas and inspiration -I love Mark’s work and am always checking up on what he’s doing…I’ve even done a whack of ‘jump’ shots in an homage to Hasselman. I don’t think I’m the only pro out there to do this.
But to take an artist’s work and reproduce it right down to the nitty-gritty, then to have it printed and published…and for her own self promotion!!! Absolutely TABOO. I’m still in shock. It goes beyond embarassing and enters the realm of SCANDALOUS!… The fleetwood mac image (complete with church in BG) for some reason really revolts me. What more can I say?

    peace and goodwill to all

Who really cares ? I mean, these are way to obvious. I don’t think it was intended to be a rip off, and nobody has stated the idea behind the campaign for these photos.

Have you all forgoten that the imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. If I were Seliger, I honestly would’t care. It doesn’t take away from his images, nor does it hurt his reputation.

This poor girl was probably jsut trying to pay the bills, give her a damn break. I don’t think any photographer has any interest in blatently ripping off another photographer. I mean for me the fun is in the creativity of it all, and it seems to me this was all planned out ahead of time, and they were jsut looking for someone to execute the concept, and so entered this girl. I mean if it meant not making any bank this quarter, what would you do ? If you said you would pass it up, you are a liar.

There are just way to many photographers now, and all of you schmucks have some pretentious opinions. Get a life people. The sad fact is that most of you are just hobbyists with way to much time on your hands, if you are searching out rip off artists. Get out and shoot if you call yourself a photographer.

To quote someone wiser than all of us :

“There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done.
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game.
    It’s easy.

Nothing you can make that can’t be made.
No one you can save that can’t be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time.
    It’s easy. ”

marinate on that one for a little while

    Peace,
    James

All this does is show up the quality of the original. Does Seliger have any case? No. This kind of rip off is done on a regular basis sometimes entirely by accident.

Qué pena, en serio. Si fuera sólo una foto, bueno…pero tantas fotos sin crédito a él? No manches. Pero lo triste es que ni me sorprende…así pasa en México.

Cut her some fucking slack. Its freaking obvious shes paying a homeage to selinger’s work. If a drew a squared vagina with some lines and a bunch of red blue and yellow squaqres would I be ripping Mondrian? Would I be explicity forced to STATE it in a small caption?
