uhhh so you know our good friends over at Verte right?

Verte logo

anyway…

Volcom just came out with this:

verde by volcom

hmmm rip off much?

Verte means green in French
Verde means green in Spanish
and uuuhhhh it’s the same fucking font!

If you put the logos on top of each other
it’s the same exact spacing and everything!

verteverde.jpg

and look at their website, the shirts are total rip offs too!
[ R O N E ] note: link has been taking down. back-pedaling are we?

‘Youth Against Establishment’ my ASS!

until further notice please boycott Volcom!
If you work in a skateshop DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM!!!!

(why would you want crappy bootleg shit in your store anyway? duh… skateboarding is about originality, creativity, and style still, right?)
————————
————————

So I thought for a second that Volcom was going to drop VERDE…
and everything was going to be cool…
That’s what they told all the shops in NY, but that was a LIE!
they were just saying that so the shops would order clothes…
They really did that! HOW FUCKED UP IS THAT?
WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE WOULD DO THAT?

(now I’m pissed obviously!)

I also like how Volcom was like “we’ve never even heard of Verte… it’s all a misunderstanding”

but in the same conversation are like “we’re really bummed that Patrick made a page about it
on his website, because a lot of people that work here look at Epicly Later’d”….

uhh so your telling me you look at my website and have never heard of VERTE!
I link to their site all the time! Someone is wearing a Verte shirt on almost every page!

Ok.. so you guy’s are either shitty plagiarists or you live under a rock…
Verte sells at Supreme, aNYthing, KCDC, Autumn and a ton of other places and Volcom
had a fucking apartment here two summers in row… are you telling me you never noticed it?

Sorry to get so steamed! But seriously, I hope the Razo’s sue the shit out of them…
imagine building a brand up from the ground for 5 years only to have it ripped off by a
a company that’s traded on NASDAQ and sold in malls? Surfer brahs and jocks across the
world are going to be wearing their shit! Their brand and trademark is going to be worthless!
Who is going to want to buy a Verte shirt when you’re confused and think it’s something
you saw on a bus-stop advertisement? Volcom is a HUGE international corporation and
I am NOT down for them stealing from my friends!

it’s like a family here…

    love me

Rezo–you are clueless about life. Fonts are not simply “basic english letters.” There are hundreds of fonts–you probably have at least 100 in your computer–and if you had ever done any art at all you’d know about kerning–the spacing of l e t t e r s is one of the most basic graphic d e s i g n tools in the world.
G: to compare lifting a popular mark, logo, or lyric to lifting an entire brand is stupid. It’s not the same thing at all.
And Jennifer: two people in the whole world having the same idea at the same time does happen, you’re right. But in the skateboarding industry, which is very small and tight, and where the Volcom skate guys are friends with many New York people, it’s not a coincidence. Don’t be naive. Beyond that, I guarantee you that Volcom’s legal beagles checked with the USPTP (patent and trademark office) and were warned about the similarities. A company like that (like the one where I work in the same industry) doesn’t move without knowing what is out there.
Folks, if you like Volcom, that’s cool. The boycott does seem a little lame. But don’t try to defend their actions with petty little bullshit statements–at least just own it, and say you like it. I like some of thier stuff these days, too, and some of the people that work there are great people. Volcom has also done it’s fiar share of supporting the skate scene in New York the last few years with their support of the Banks projects…

  14. on 19 Sep 2006 at 6:14 pm rob

From a designers point of view.. the only thing even close to those two designs is the font (a stock, comes-with-windows-font, btw) and the letter spacing. Saying that’s a rip-off is pretty much saying any one of the thousands of web 2.0 logos which have vectors coming off of generic typography techniques is also a rip off of Verte. Don’t get me wrong, this sites dope. But this specific claim is a little retarded.

  15. on 19 Sep 2006 at 7:17 pm rezo

    thank you rob!!!

mark….so im cluelessabout the world….i am rather young so im not going to argue that i have a lot to learn…but you had no way of knowing that…your just making irrashional generalizing statements…and i guess im just old fashion but i seem to like my art to be real…you know on paper done by hand…i dont know you so im not going to rag on you but it seems like a lot of ppl these days just edit photos on photoshop and call it art… i hope that you arnt one of these ppl.

  17. on 22 Sep 2006 at 9:37 am Mo

Dude… It’s not the same spacing on the letters at all. And the typeface is not really a very particular one, is it? The word “green” in different languages is so generic that you can’t expect it to be protected. Did you add this post in your blog to fill it up a bit?

  18. on 24 Sep 2006 at 9:46 am Pen

Look. Everyone is getting worked up here. Let me tell you I don’t give a crap about Verte or Volcom but I’ll tell you this: That Verde T-shirt is a total copy of the Verte. Anyone who argues otherwise is a banana. They are exactly the same. It is weird to read people arguing that they aren’t – it’s like what are you LOOKING AT? And who is paying you to argue this? The Blind Association?

  19. on 25 Sep 2006 at 6:42 am God Is Angry

How many other skate clothing companies out there have copied Volcom’s ad styles over the years…take that into consideration as well. I mean if anybody is getting ripped off by everyone is Volcom’s style. Those Verte shirts are similar to all the crap out there if you ask me. It’s all a joke, and Verte isn’t even about putting enviroment friendly products out their…sounds like they’re green with envy.
I’m a designer and I have art ripped off by skate companies too…boo hoo…boycott yourself.

It’s not the same font. The letters are different – look at the ‘e’ and the ‘r’. You don’t need to be a graphic design nerd like me to see that; you just need eyes.

The logos are similar, but what’s much more worrying is the fact that some of you chumps write like retarded baboons on crack: ‘quincidence’, ‘irrashional’… genius.

Passion is the word. Great companies both small and large have it.

Volcome is a great company, they wouldnt be where they are if they werent. It is their designers responsiblity to the company, and themselves to shop every store, know every brand in order to set themselves apart.

I know they do this, everyone here knows it as well. This is why it IS a big deal.

I am a designer in the industry, and I would try to avoid at all costs my creativity being scrutinized by plagiarism.

Volcome designers: I know it is your first response to defend yourselfs, but let the emotion subside. In the future dont let it come so close. Don’t lose your peers respect.

  26. on 19 Oct 2006 at 5:22 pm oggie

Why does Volcom have to be a great company to have got to where they are? Look where McDonald’s is; are they a great company? Likewise Von Dutch. Successful companies don’t need good products or original ideas to get where they are. Most people are crap and have bad taste, that’s why mediocre things sell the most. If you don’t believe me, just have a quick look at the pop charts.

You can just cut out the R. Duh. The R in the Verte is longer. Just cut the R (simple in photoshop). I don’t know too much about clothing. But that’s to end the dispute on the Typography.

  29. on 26 Oct 2006 at 4:28 pm Greg

I design for a living, and to me right away they looked different. In particlular the ‘r’ that is the real ‘custom’ part of the verte logo.

The r gives it that style, if the volcom r looked anything near like the verte r then i’d be more inclined to call it a rip. In the end you have to ask more than if something looks similar, but what are the reasons why one design might look similar to another? In this case I think Volcom was going for a clean environmental look, a ‘green’ look if you will. Which clearly isn’t revolutionary, you probably know exactly the style that ‘green’ now implies. So fault Volcom for being a bit unoriginal there. But the flip side that verte really has no ‘green’ / enviromental connections also really implies that verte isn’t an industry leader in the ‘green’ arena so similarities seem even more likely to be happenstance.

Not saying it couldn’t be a rip… just that it really isn’t conclusive.
Designers and artists work in dialects and styles, in particular clean and simple styles just don’t leave a lot of room for major differences. Also, the differences in this instance are real enough. In the end I think it would be wise to give the benefit of the doubt before engaging in a puritanical witch hunt. Unless that is your bag…

    nuff.

  30. on 17 Nov 2006 at 1:47 am Marc

I have nothing to do with skateboards (gave mine to goodwill back in 99. But just looking at the two logos or words on this website…they don’t look similar enough to me. verte uses all lowercase, Verde has a capital V. The e’s at the end are connected differently. The R is completely different. Maybe they did intend to copy the spirit…and maybe you have a trademark case (I have only studied copyright), but a copyright case is a longshot here with the common folk.

  32. on 12 Dec 2006 at 10:41 pm Anonymous

That Verde logo is just the Chalet London 1960 font by House Industry with the “e” tilted and some leaves on the “d”
Seems doubtful that its a ripoff at all.

  33. on 14 Dec 2006 at 6:26 am greenlee

so ive never heard of verte and i love volcom
but i hate the fact that it is so popular
verde was one of volcoms projects that was supposed to be released to only their select dealers; only the specialty shops that buy limited ammounts of volcom product, not corporations, like zumiez and pacsun. apparently, other stores can buy and sell it too. anyways, sure it can be looked at as plagiarism or it can be looked at as a coincidence but either way, the word is whats important, not who makes it. the word means green in either language and i believe it has a meaning of preservation and a mind for the environmentally friendly.

it means protect what we have, use just what we need, dont trash everything, and make the whole world a better place. idealistic? yes, i think so. a good goal? again, yes, something to work for.

  34. on 18 Dec 2006 at 6:16 am J.

Whoever cannot see that this is a blatant ripoff-considering the sport, the city, the scene, the site, the people is missing a chromosome or three. take off yer fucking blindfolds!!!

  35. on 21 Dec 2006 at 10:19 pm marky

    That’s not the same font!

The ‘e’ in the original is wider, the ‘r’ lacks the same style and the caps are very different sizes.

I think this is just a coincidence… I have seen similar logos like that before.

  36. on 22 Dec 2006 at 5:35 am J.

you don’t think anyone at Volcom ever heard of Verte before or seen their logo? this isn’t typography CSI!

I don’t think those are the same at all.

  49. on 03 May 2007 at 3:06 am Bear

Hmm… that font looks very similar to one created by Benjamin Franklin for his printing press back in the 1700s (it comes with windows by the way). I doubt anyone will credit him, eh? Probably not. But then again nothing is really new anymore is it?

But I have a much bigger question why the hell do people where somebody else’s name or brand across their breasts? Why would you advertise for a company who has it’s clothes made in countries that have no child labor laws. I mean sure, as much as I want to go naked in public I can’t so I wear clothes made in China, but I don’t advertise for free mind you for companies where I don’t know what exactly they are doing in terms of employee treatment the environment. I wonder how much of the environment is destroyed in making one verde or verte shirt. I understand wearing a band t-shirt
or a shirt advertising a brand of skateboards but
to just wear some company name for free, that seems
like these companies think very little of us consumers because they know we will be dumb enough
to do most of the marketing for us and so keep making shirts with there stupid name blazed across
the front. How lame is it that this society bases
a large part of your status by the name on your shirt?

Volcom used to be youth against the establishment, they had to drop that when they became part of the establishment, I think that’s funny simply because
    it reeks of selling out.

BTW words are not copyrighted in general so I think the folks at Volcom should’ve just used Verte to really piss people off. That would’ve been bold and funny.

    Ciao,
    Bear

the more I read, the more I realize none of you have a clue. first off, volcom’s “youth against establishment” motto is more about creativity and expressing yourself than having a plan to stick it to the man, for chrissakes they are a clothing company, part of the capitalist system that is the shit USA…. sellouts? what do you guys know about sell outs? Bet you’ve all sold out on something in your life……. yah, bet ya.

Fuck the VERTE controversy, the people at VCO have already changed the labelling, and they have join 1% For The Planet, what have the Razo’s done? nothing, just bite whoever they got their creative ideas off of.

I’m saddened by blogs like these, unmaintained and so ill informed. You should just get up in the morning and try to be a better person.

  55. on 09 Jun 2007 at 5:55 pm V.com

Really…You have to be kidding me. All skate brands are carrying a green line, who knows maybe the graphic designer for verte and verde got a double pay check. Art is all rip off’s, get over it. I have heard of volcom, but definitely not verte. I do know that Volcom has done similar screens in long years past including anchors and suspenders, its called trend not rip offs. When you go to a trade show and view everyone’s clothing line they are all just a variation of each other. All of them have organic cotton, all of them have t’s that proceeds got to saving the planet, 50% bamboo, blah blah blah! It’s all a trend and frankly, clothing brands including verte stand behind a “green” label so that consumers buy it! It’s good for our planet, added value, and money in the producer’s pocket. There are no more original or unique ideas, there hasn’t been for years. Spend your life on something of more worth that slandering a brand that doesn’t market to you anyway! Go try and come up with your own unique idea, post it on the net, let me search it out and then call you a thief!

  58. on 24 Jun 2008 at 3:51 pm Jason

Skate companies are notorious for taking an idea/design and modifying it and making it “their own”…while I don’t agree with what they do (I mean seriously…have a LITTLE bit of creativity), its hard to really say that it is intentionally the same design. Fonts in general are very similar…I have about 20 fonts on my computer currently that are like that one…

Basically, while it lacks originality, I hardly see it as a blatant copy

What up ya’ll, From the deep south. If anyone wants to argue that go a head and show me a state, claiming to be the deep south, geographicly further south than Florida. I have and will always be a huge fan of Volcom. I was rocking Volcom since 7th grade in 1996. You can’t buy into this “he said she said bull shit” (sorry for quoting limpbizkit), but it is true. Volcom has always and I pray will always be an establishment that promotes creativity and progression no matter the charges held against them. Keep fighting the good fight “V”. Let the hate fuel the fire of creativity.
