I have been looking around, trying to see if Hot Topic made a deal with Nina Ricci about this or anything but I have found nothing, so I brought it here to see what you guys think or if anyone here knows anything to clear this up.

THIS is a picture of Nina Ricci’s original fragrance, “Nina”:

and this is the Twilight-themed perfume that Hot Topic is releasing:

As you can see, the bottles look pretty much exactly the same. I know the fragrances are not the same though. The notes in Nina are mostly fruity and floral, there’s citrus, apple, some vanilla, peony, moonflower, etc. You can find all the notes for Nina here: http://www.nina-parfum.com/

The people in the Now Smell This link pointed out that the notes for the Twilight one are Lavender and Freesia (apparently they’re written on the box, perfumes never do that.) I’ve also seen comments in other places saying it smells more like PineSol than anything else.

So, what’s going on here?

[EDIT]
Seems like they ARE going to sue!

Absolute bottle rip…and a cheap one at that from review read here:
    http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemID=114368/Hot_Topic_-_Twilight_Perfume_(Limited_Edition)/Unlisted_Brand/Fragrances

The Ricci is in a quality bottle as are most “better” perfumes i.e. fifteen cents of juice in a three dollar (wholesale to the manufacturer) bottle. This Twilight stank is five cents in a fifty scent bottle.

hrm…there is a whole industry of if you like this then you’ll like this perfumes that rip bottles off of famous perfumes.

I wonder if it’s that company?

I wonder if this is make to smell like Edward’s breath…(really hated the book).

they used the same bottle manufacturer

Mike, a bottle design like that would be tradmarked or whatever. It’s not a perfum bottle genericus – it was created specifically for the particular scent.

I’ve written to Puig, the license holder for Nina Ricci Fragrances, asking them about the matter. I will advise more if I hear back.

Um…the apple motif is all over Twilight crap, including the original book cover. (These days, there’s a movie-tie in version.) Twilight sucks, but that doesn’t mean this is a rip off of anything.

Well how isn’t it a rip-off? The bottle is the same exact shape, the only differences are the leaves look kind of rounded in the Twilight bottle (they’re still the same three leaves in the SAME positions though), it has letters on it and it’s completely red instead of fading into red.

Otherwise the shape is just completely the same, and they’re still using red

Nina was released in 2006 btw.

They are very similar. However, this could be the act of someone else and Hot Topic isn’t actually producing the perfume, just selling it.

i’d say the bottle is a rip, but it was probably done without Hot Topic’s knowledge. They buy things from manufacturers, they do not make them. I think the ire should be directed at the manufacturer, not hot Topic

Doesn’t all perfume and cologne smell like Pine-sol compared to real fruit and flowers though? :P

Jeeezus… a ‘Twilight’ perfume *shakes head*

Makes sense that the merch. is a complete rip-off of other peoples ideas…except done to a lesser standard. I mean, the book was, right?

  12. on 17 Jan 2009 at 12:10 am J

Kforbes84 said it best. An unoriginal bottle for an unoriginal movie about an unoriginal book.
You would think they would try to make it apple scented.

Has anyone actually done due diligence to see if the producers of the Twilight perfume actually gotten permission to use the bottle design?

  14. on 12 Feb 2009 at 8:24 am Joey

Hot Topic is not the producers of this perfume.
I know that Borders and Suncoast both sold the same exact perfume. I’m sure that there were more retailers selling it too.

Bearing in mind that the advert for ‘Nina’ perfume takes blatant inspiration from Anya Gallaccio’s work…

Nina Ricci has got to be really good. And I agree; it isn’t too out of range of one’s budget, either.

If you are looking for an all-around great cologne for yourself or for the special man in your life, It is a wonderful choice and has a great scent and isn’t too intense for you to wear at any time. This five star-rated cologne is also a very affordable option for anyone who is interested in wearing a designer scent.

High end designer perfumes and colognes can be fairly expensive. This is actually fairly reasonable when taking into consideration that it is from a top designer.
