I don’t know the last one might have been a tribute but it wasn’t 100% like the original like this one is. (i.e colors changed, character design not exactly copied, etc) This really looks like a flatout rip. The only thing they did do was change the text.

  2. on 03 Mar 2009 at 10:14 pm sistargirl

of course it would look like a bite. it was taken from the loteria card as inspiration, how much different can you get without taking away the actual concept of it?

Is the image of the skeleton with the scythe unique enough to be copyrightable? I would have guessed public domain if pressed. Admittedly this looks like a trace, but is the original even protected?

What about those el borracho shirts you see at the fair?

As much as I love some of the stuff that “The Hundreds” puts out, it kinda pisses me off that they (and other brands out there, like “Rebel 8″) are taking stuff like this from our culture. If it comes from Mr. Cartoon or Esteban Oriol, it might be fine, but this is kind of insulting.

Some day, some gang members who take the whole “C/S” (Con Safos thing that Rebel 8 likes to use) seriously are going to beat the Christ out of Mike Giant and the rest of his crew for thinking that it’s all just a big joke. I hope these guys realize they are treading on thin ice.

  6. on 04 Mar 2009 at 9:57 pm Ulfikedup

Do you all fail to realize the image from the card has been lifted to be put on the t-shirt? There is not “inspiration” or copyright laws involved. The exact image from that card has been put on a t-shirt. If it were inspired by, it wouldn’t be the exact same image. The concept and imagery of a skeleton with a scythe is not protected under copyright BUT if you take that exact same skeleton with a scythe THEN it is.

The hundreds and almost every “streetwear” brand are guilty of this kind of bullshit.

People think they can just google search an image, put it on a shirt and call it art.

but the hundreds is for kids and idiots anyways so who cares.

  8. on 05 Mar 2009 at 10:00 pm FUCKPOPSTREETART

MEXICAN CULTURE FUCKING SLAYS TO BAD NOT THAT MANY MEXICANS ARE ACTUALLY GETTING PAID WHEN THEIR CULTURE IS BEEN RAPED AN GIVEN TO THE MASSES. I AGREE WITH ANON SOME OF THIS STUFF ISNT A JOKE TO ALOT OF PEOPLE

  9. on 05 Mar 2009 at 11:44 pm 1981

The Hundreds think that because they make their “inspirations” so obvious that they are doing a homage or tribute to these artists, bands, brands, and cartoons. If they really wanted to do an homage or tribute they would create original designs that lead the customer to connect the dots. Instead The Hundreds prefer to “cleverly” re-purpose art and designs from others and repackage it.

This isn’t news to anyone and the fact remains that The Hundreds have enough people fooled that it doesn’t matter how many people point out their rip offs.

Also to the ANON talking about Mike Giant “ripping off” Mexican culture you’re a dolt. Mike grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has put in a ton of work on the street level. His chicano letter styles come from a very real place. By your logic because he isn’t Mexican he shouldn’t draw a certain way? Furthermore why do Mr. Cartoon and Esteban Oriol get a pass? Those dudes aren’t gang bangers. Wouldn’t they be exploiting the culture in the same way? Selling the rights to their work to the likes of Nike, T-Mobile, Upper Payground, Scion? Do you think they take the money from those commissions and give a portion to the people in the picture? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

  10. on 09 Mar 2009 at 6:14 pm dugo

Also to the ANON talking about Mike Giant “ripping off” Mexican culture you’re a dolt. Mike grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and SO WHO GIVES A SHIT if he grew up there that doesnt mean shit he is still making money off Mexican culture i think that was ANON was talking about

  11. on 09 Mar 2009 at 10:44 pm 1981

    To Dugo:

That’s weird. Here I am thinking he’s making money from having drawn everyday of his life for the last 30 plus years and as it just so happens he happens to draw a wide variety of chicano imagery and various letterforms, but not even exclusively mind you. Just some times. So I guess he “some times” profits off of the culture. How does one some times profit off a culture Dugo? I mean he draws skulls, bicycles, Victorian houses, panthers, dragons, and whatever else, but as soon as he draws something that is from that culture he is all of sudden profiting from it.

And what’s this he’s a tattoo artist? Wait a second is there a connection between chicano imagery such as the virgin mary, cholas, numerology, gang culture, and dio de los muertos skulls? You don’t think because he grew in Albuquerque that those kinds of symbols might have had an effect on the subject matter of his work do you? No can’t be. You’re totally right. He’s DEFINITELY “profiting” of a style of work that is not “his” because he’s white. Are you getting the point here? You can join ANON in the dunce club of racists.

  12. on 10 Mar 2009 at 7:11 am fdeezy

This has nothing to do with race. this guy didnt draw anything, he pretty much copy pasted and thats the point.

  13. on 10 Mar 2009 at 5:24 pm andrew

not to put too fine a point on it, but one needn’t have grown up around any particular culture to find it inspiring or influential in their work. this site is about ripping off original art. if we start lambasting people for being influenced by the multi-cultural environment around them, then we’re all screwed.

  14. on 10 Mar 2009 at 6:15 pm dugo

to 1981 first of all i know what type of work giant has done but i never once brought his skin color you did so you might be racist all im saying is that he is making money off the culture and maybe all you hipster think skulls , bikes, an whatever he draws are cool. virgin is religion not just chicanos numerology is early mathematicians not just chicanos gang culture is every race not just chicanos dia de los muertos skulls now thats chicano stuff right there. maybe he should draw other type of gangstarrs?? or maybe draw semis eagles. all i was saying is that he is making money of a culture thats it simple as that dont get you panties in a bunch also im white so what are you talking about know????

  15. on 10 Mar 2009 at 7:08 pm 1981

Your whole argument is that he is “profiting” off a culture that he is not “a part” of. So by your logic if he isn’t mexican than he is not allowed to draw symbols of mexican culture. You’re judgement is based solely on the fact that he is not drawing within his race. Thus making you think in a racist manner. I’m sure you’re not a full blown racist, but c’mon that’s what it sounds like you’re trying to say.

And how exactly is he making money off the culture? You’re not explaining that part? He’s an artist. He makes money from being exceptionally talented at drawing and painting. Do graffiti artist make money by exploiting letters then?

Read this cover story in Swindle:

    http://swindlemagazine.com/issue19/mike-giant/

He talks about growing up in New Mexico, but at no point does the article even mention his Chicano imagery. You know why? Because he draws lots of stuff. If he was so known for his “mexican” style then you think they would have mentioned it.

If you wanted to make the argument that he is exploiting or profiting from tattoo culture than I would have never even responded, but to just say that he’s making a buck off Mexican culture when a huge part of his work isn’t even focused on it is absurd.

I think it just comes down to jealousy. It’s easy to knock someone down who’s popular without having any real point.

If you don’t like dude’s work that’s cool. You don’t have to, but don’t go making up non sense about how he makes money off Hispanic culture because that’s just not the case.

  16. on 11 Mar 2009 at 12:22 am dugo

“profiting” off a culture that he is not “a part” i never said he was a part of it or not a part of it.So by your logic if he isn’t mexican than he is not allowed to draw symbols of mexican culture, once again never said that dont read between the lines your making up all these stuff up never made nonsense if it was enough to get a reply out of you. i just said he is making money off mexican culture thats it. also i wasnt really knocking him i was just say my opinion also you brought up new mexico so lets just drop it he is still making money off Mexican culture i think that was ANON was talking about. key words “I THINK” classic case of agree to disagree truce????????

  17. on 11 Mar 2009 at 6:51 am 1981

    cool

  18. on 11 Mar 2009 at 7:37 am Anon

The only thing I was referring to in my original post was the fact that where I grew up in LA, “CON SAFOS” (C/S) is what a gang puts at the end of a tagged up wall; anyone caught vandalizing or writing over it at the very least got a vicious beat down. If a rival gang member were to cross out someone’s name from a wall, it was immediately responded to with violence. (I won’t even begin to talk about the other stuff he’s done; that’s a topic for another discussion altogether)

The fact that some of Mike Giant’s stuff has it in a disrespectful and joking manner leads me to believe that he’s potentially opening himself up to violence from people who actually take this seriously. Trust me, they exist. Some of those gang members are straight up psychos. I know a lot of you guys grew up or currently live in the suburbs or whatever and haven’t really been exposed to gang culture, but believe me when I say these guys get easily offended when it comes to perceived disrespect, especially when it comes to what Mike Giant is doing. They might see he’s just some pinche chavala and put him in his place.

    @1981

I don’t need to explain why Mr. Cartoon and Oriol get a “pass” and why Mike Giant doesn’t. If you’ve ever been to his tattoo shop or met him or any of his people, you’d know.

omg you are so gay anon…..

  21. on 12 Mar 2009 at 11:46 pm 1981

I said “cool” cause I thought you were done and seemed like you were backtracking about Mike “profiting” off chicano culture, but then you go on and say a whole bunch of moronic dribble about him drawing chicano gang imagery in a “joking or disrespectful manner”

Clearly you aren’t looking at the article I posted. It showcases a wide variety of his recent work some of it is in the style you’re apparently talking about and yet I don’t see how you could even possibly look at it and say it is disrespectful or a joking manner. It is authentic as it gets. You’d know that if you actually been to the places you say you have.

Again he grew up in ALBUQUERQUE NEW MEXICO.

Have you ever been to Albuquerque?

I have. Twice. It is not a sunny place. There is no nice “part” in that city and if you read the article you would have read where he discuses about growing up in a bad neighborhood and how it got so bad that he recently relocated back to SF.

I personally grew up in a predominantly Hispanic part of San Diego and saw the “gang culture” that you are trying to make into some big scary thing. Maybe you’re a little shook, but if you aren’t a moron and don’t go to the wrong place at the wrong time you’ll do just fine for the most part. I knew some dudes that banged and they were cool with me and I was cool with them. Sure I got hit up a couple of times when I was skating in a bad part of, but nothing substantial ever came of it.

I’ve met Estevan and Cartoon and all of the dudes in the photos blah, blah, blah who cares. I actually know Mike fairly too. Which is why I started calling you out in the first place. So don’t try and bs me with this “go by their shop and you’ll see” crap cause I’ve been there and it’s nothing to write about.

My point was that those two (using your argument) are “profiting” off the gang culture and working with the likes of T-Mobile, Nike, Scion, and you’re okay with that. But you’re trying to throw Mike and his work under the bus because he’s not Mexican and draws chicano imagery and some how (which you’ve yet to explain) profits off it.

This all can be summed up by the fact that you’re just hating without any substantial reason and have no idea what you’re talking about.

Also if you haven’t noticed the post was about The Hundreds and not about Mike Giant supposedly “profiting” off chicano gang culture. If you’re so sure of yourself send him an email and tell him how you think he’s a phoney and tell him you’re a total poser with no sense while you’re at it.

    Done.

I am also from ABQ- you are wrong, there are very safe and wealthy parts of town- one of which the LeSage family has owned a home in for almost 30 yrs.

Mike researches, explores and honors the places that his imagery comes from. He doesn’t claim to “own” them any more than anyone else can. Personally I don’t care for the man, but he deserves credit for not mindlessly appropriating imagery for a profit. To me, this transcends the fact that he traces almost everything that he draws directly from reference to make his art a symbolic representation of the culture of his time and place.

IMHO loteria imagery is so iconic it should be considered public domain. The loteria boards that get printed all use this same image, im pretty sure the image is no longer copyright protected. Some things are so common they cant be considered intellectual theft, this is one of them. Its a cultural reference, not a rip.

  28. on 24 Mar 2009 at 12:59 pm C

BTW is “Mexican Board game”, not “Mexican bored game”

  29. on 09 Apr 2009 at 6:16 am k-zumi

Guys, all the Lotería artwork are trademarks from El Gallo since 1887…

If you buy a game you will find and extra card with all the copyright info.

  30. on 09 Apr 2009 at 6:18 am k-zumi

So yes, this is a mayor rip…

  31. on 10 Apr 2009 at 10:23 am Abe

Bored game? Why the fuck are so many of the people on this site incapable of writing a simple sentence without fucking it up in some ridiculous way? Stay in school.
