Oilily rips off independent designer Rosa Pomar
April 1st, 2009 by alice
Dutch clothing company Oilily as launched, in their spring ‘09 collection a soft doll that is a flagrant copy of Portuguese independent designer Rosa Pomar’s signature doll.
They have not only produced an exact copy of the doll, as they have printed the image of her copyrighted design all over the fabric from which part of the ‘09 collection is made of.
Rosa Pomar has her own blog since 2001, having documented all of her creative process from the beggining, including all the dolls she has ever made.
Here’s the original doll, from Rosa Pomar:

These sock monsters/puppets/plush dolls have been about for decades, Rosa didn’t invent the monster – I don’t think it’s attributable to one person specifically.
Unfortunate but true.
It’s close, but you shouldn’t claim it’s an “exact copy of the doll” when it obviously isn’t an exact copy.
It is stealing. It would be hard to make a copyright case out of it but it is obvious they took the original and changed things just enough to get away with it. It is sad but very common for companies like Oilily, who use to put out really cool original items to become so big they start cruising little handcraft sites to steal ideas . CHEESY . The original doll is much cuter but it will suck if your customers get confused when they see a doll that looks like yours being sold with cheaper detail at Oilily.
Hope she can afford a lawsuit. If it’s any consolation, Rosa’s doll looks tons better than Oilily’s.
eh dolls like this are not new and they are only vaguely similar.
So many people on this site rip one design and get mad when someone else rips them.
awful!
the original looks wayyy better!
I have seen dolls like this for years, neither one are original. I think neither one should claim them as their idea. I do agree you do have to be careful when putting your work online.
