Op/Walmart rips off Roxy

Here are  2 BLATANT ripoffs of Roxy’s graphics tees.  The company that creates Op’s graphics for Walmart is called Iconix Brand Group in New York City. They do a lot of private label designs and direct to retail licensing for Walmart and Kohl’s brands.

The Op ripoff’s are on the left, Roxy’s original designs are on the right. They seriously look like they where traced in some places.walmart-BITES_600px

The first one isn’t a rip at all. They both use a heart and swirls but that’s it, and you can’t copyright that stuff. The second one looks like a blatant rip off though. And in both examples it looks like whoever designed this drew it on paper with a marker and scanned it in, and they really can’t draw. At least make the effort to make the execution of your rip look good, since you didn’t have to do any work in coming up with a concept. This was probably a five minute job by some idiot who had no time before a deadline.

I agreed at first, but on second look, the 1st one looks like they just reversed the original and went from there. Definitely a rip.

You have GOT to be kidding. seriously? I admit, the second example is the same idea (though obviously not traced) but the first one is fucking pathetic. Are swirly hearts supposed to be original?

I like the Op/Walmart stuff better, but they are all ugly.

True you can’t copyright and idea. True hearts and swirls aren’t the most original idea. But does that mean it isn’t a rip off??? They are totally copies! And it just shows the laziness of whoever designed the Walmart tees.

On another note, I don’t think the Roxy ones are ugly. They are just older styles of girls surf tees.

It’s not the IDEA that’s a rip off, as nobody owns the patent on waves or swirly hearts. It’s the fact that they literally TRACED the reversed artwork from the originals (at least in the first one).

They both have enough similarities that it would seem obvious that the OP/Walmart ‘artist’ based their designs off of the Kelly ones. But the proportions are off enough in both that they clearly weren’t ‘traced’.
More likely, it just seems whoever did the OP/Walmart designs simply decided “I’ll just redraw these, and change them around enough to make it not a copyright infringement.”
Which, you can argue that that is a bit bullshit, but it’s also the way the entire world of fashion has always worked. A designer (whether it be haute couture for a fashion show or awards show, or a independent online designer) comes up with a unique and popular design, and then other people create knockoffs for the lower end of the market.

HA HA ! Roxy is known for knocking off small brands. There are examples on this website of it. Roxy doesn’t even change a thing when they copy. I would consider this more inspiration then knock off. They are totally different. It would not hold up in a court of law. What goes around comes around.

you could make posts like this all day. Walmart wants designs that are very closely related to other popular brands such as roxy and they are also obviously biting off afflictions style in the men’s dept. Walmart doesn’t want originality they want a cheap version of what they know the white trash that shop there wish they could afford.
