Olympus rips off “Wolf and Pig” photo video.
July 12th, 2009 by Kirvi Inci
On there you tube page it says “…Thanks to all the stop motion artists who inspired us. ..”
This is a complete rip/bite of this.
Granted you connot copywright ideas, but this is just too similar. It even boasts the same opening.

Meh definitely inspired, but not a rip. The idea is the same, but I don’t see how you say it’s just too similar. The olympus one is alot better and more fluid, and the song isn’t as annoying as the wolf and pig one.
Definitely a rip, shame on you Olympus
Was “wolf and pig” created before 9 April 2009 (the date on the Youtube video)? Because I’ve definitely seen videos done with the same technique before.
Just think of all the money they’re making off of that rip!
SHAME
Not to mention they’ve now given credit to the “original.” This is when complaining about biting is leaning towards the absurd and risks stifling use of new ideas.
I thought the original idea was great and I look forward to seeing more folks use the same technique and possibly expanding on it. Before the righteous indignation, maybe a chance to let the person acknowledge the works that came before?
original and rip are both terrible
Olympus’ comment on YouTube ticked me off:
“For this reason we intentionally quoted his work in our little movie while showing full respect to his original idea. We didnt mention his name because we did not want to do so without his prior agreement.”
WTF That’s like saying “Yeah, I didn’t say that I stole it all from you because I thought you might not want your name to be mentioned.” *head desk*
(oh sorry about the , I didn’t know these comments don’t take html codes)
LafinJack: Yes I believe it was.
Yazfim: They only gae credit to the original AFTER enough people pointed out their blatant rip.
huge rip…olympus just tried to take it further.
busted for sure.
oh, holy crap, a camera company tried to expand on a concept involving photographs. what’s the gripe here? they didn’t include a credit sequence (that no one would watch) wherein they acknowledge student x from university y for the groundbreaking work on his mid-term project? it isn’t as though they stole the… story?
Well, that concept happens to be THE thing that makes this clip stand out from others. And it’s a camera company indeed, that makes the technique one of the most important things in this clip.
They do have a different story but their way of storytelling is the same and there are many similarities (pics crawling up the wall, over the table, standing up, the intro scene with the envelope). It’s not just the technique of making animation with photo’s that has been copied, it’s much more.
They have a really elegant way of describing ‘copying and stealing’, they call it ‘quoted’ and ’showing full respect for his original idea’. But the pig clip isn’t famous, how could anyone know what was ‘quoted’ and which idea was the original if they didn’t give credit to the first animator? What a lot of bullshit!
It’s obvious where they got the idea from but this isn’t biting or ripping or what have you. Some of you are foaming at the mouth over nonsense. The original is a rip too, I did the same shit back in high school for my art class and I stole the idea from a senior who did the same thing who stole it from a tv show he watched and and and….
^ you are part of the problem.
^^^HA HA HA!!
It reminds me of Teeny Little Super Guy! …except with photos

“their way of storytelling is the same”
Well… What if the Lumiere brothers would have said that to the other film makers…
Uhm. I’m a short film animator, and I’ve seen a hell of a lot of films, and I’ve seen photo montage animation used a few times before Wolf and Pig. Photo montage isn’t new. The only definable similarity is the way the photos “travel” and even that was done in a different way.
If we really want to talk about blatant ripoff of experimental techniques, how about Bonnaro 09′ stealing the technique created and used by Javin Ivey in his senior film? They NEVER gave him credit.

what makes me laugh id thst land rover in the uk are now doing advdert in the exact same style as all of them. trying to find a link but will post when i do
The stories might be different, but the concept, visual style is certainly ripped off.
Now i’m in two minds with this. Copyrighting a technique like that would be like copyrighting a brushstroke or method of painting. Which is silly, but the concept, or execution of the technique in that way clearly is a copyreightable thing surely?
Wolf & Pig and Olympus Pen is almost a carbon copy, it’s the equivalent of me copying the HTML layout from one site and pasting my own content instead.
That’s what appears to be happening here and now with landrover now at it, it’s not really fair. They should’ whenever possible obtain the permission of the original artist, or aknowledge them for it.
It’s not wrong to to a homage either (see Danish bacon’s breakfast transformer ad & the citreon C4? ad). But this is ‘extracting the urine’.
