Type The Sky Once More
January 10th, 2010 by sparehed

it would seem that Lisa Rienermann’s very distinct photogaphy-meets-typopgraphy work Type The Sky (above) is an endless source of “inspiration” for advertising “creatives”. After Mercedes-Benz and Renault (see here), it’s the CHE Agency from Melbourne, Australia, that do the exact same thing for A+ Architecture (below). It wouldn’t be so sad, really, if they hadn’t focused their campaign on inspiration…

So?
It’s the same idea to make letters.
Not the same pictures.
@nine
come on, it’s not just the same idea, it’s the exact same aesthetics. just look at the letter ‘d’. it’s so identical, it’s exactly the same architectural elements.
Ideas are not copyrighted unfortunately so I’m not sure if the original artist can take any legal action. But it’s kind of ironic and sad that she’s been ripped in an ad about inspiration…. Bad execution too with the dark grey and glowing effects.
It seems perfectly fitting to me that their “inspiration” campaign was inspired completely by this artist.
Joking aside, if these ad designers didn’t use her original photos, they technically didn’t do anything illegal. You can’t copyright ideas OR aesthetics, so as long as it’s cheaper to get a rehashing of a great idea as opposed to buying the original art… businesses are going to do it.
Hahaha! What “inspiration.” People lack such creativity.
You can tell a bunch of hacks by their constant overuse of the words “inspired”, “inspiring”, and “inspiration”. What they mean is “we plagiarised”, “we will soon plagiarise” and “shove it up your ass mofo!”. Such hacks are in contempt of the people they pinch off and in contempt of the people who buy their crap. AVOID.
@robokid one can’t copyright aesthetics ether. Too bad…
They have clearly copied you Lisa. Doing your ‘own version’ of another persons idea doesn’t make it right.
Regardless of whether the pictures are the same or not – she designed a TYPEFACE – the idea is not copywritten, and especially not for typography. WHy would you design a typeface if you didn’t imagine it being reused anyway? That’s the whole point of being a type designer.
Nine and Maaike – you can copyright ideas. I doubt that the artist in this case actually did but ideas are copyrighted all the time. It’s called Intellectual Property.
I remember seeing this idea in a PhotoJojo newsletter. So yea, it’s inspirational. If I do this in my city, I’m not sending PhotoJojo nor Lisa a check.
re: copywritten… it’s copyright… something is copyrighted (sounds a bit weird yes, but it’s not write and ‘written’) sorry, pet peeve. Carry on.
Lisa was involved in this project. See below.
