YTWWN SAYS: this is a good example of what not to post on this site:

—————————————————————————–

I noticed that Silverchairs Young Modern (2007) cover art….

Silverchair Young Modern album cover
…appears to have borrowed from a Oliver Herring work The Sum and It’s Parts (2000)

Oliver Herring The sum and it's parts

I never cared much for their music anyway.

Obviously they’re both imitations of Mondrian’s work.

  2. on 27 Oct 2007 at 10:52 am Ross

See Piet Modrian on wikipedia, in particular http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piet_Mondrian#References_In_Pop_Culture

  3. on 27 Oct 2007 at 11:24 am Guido

Holy hell, are you parodying yourselves now? I think this blog performs a genuinely useful service for the most part, but if this post isn’t some sort of asinine prank then I’ve lost all faith in my generation. Please tell me you’re kidding. Please.

  4. on 27 Oct 2007 at 11:40 am barbara

oh my god. Is that a joke? It’s hard to believe that the author of this post doesn’t know Mondrian’s work…

  5. on 27 Oct 2007 at 11:48 am Eric

Seriously… have you NEVER seen Piet Mondrian’s work? Lots of times you have legitimate and arguable ripoffs that are good to bring to light.. this is just ridiculous. The two examples you site have no relation other than mondrian.. if the artwork inspired by Mondrian was the same or similar (extrusion, angle, dimensions) but it isn’t…

I agree, this looks like self-parody more than anything.

See what happens when they stop teaching the arts in school?

  7. on 27 Oct 2007 at 1:34 pm LiQ

I agree with David, poor kid just needs an art lesson :( I’ll plead ignorance on his behalf.

    oxox

  8. on 27 Oct 2007 at 2:04 pm Chris

Ignorance is one thing, but of such a well known artist?

Stupidity would seem the preferable word.

@Guido: this blog is set up so that anyone can post on it, there doesn’t appear to be a central author, just a moderator (when I first started reading it I said some of the same things you did). It’d be kind of nice if it were set up differently, but until then we get posts like these which make me laugh a lot.

  11. on 27 Oct 2007 at 6:15 pm Dan

I don’t want to overstate it, but this is probably the worst post ever on here. I know you sometimes delete these, but keep this one around, please.

  12. on 27 Oct 2007 at 7:41 pm Flynn

This post just underlines the core problem with this site; it has a hard time differentiating between quoting and outright theft.

  13. on 28 Oct 2007 at 2:51 am Cody

I’m glad this one didn’t get deleted. The author had good intentions, but this is just too funny. Plus, now I have a little more respect for Silverchair, I hadn’t seen this album cover before, it is very good.

    ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  15. on 28 Oct 2007 at 9:23 am Ripoff Artist

    Oh My Allah.
    Are you kidding Cody?
Helen Keller could’ve done better record art than this.

  16. on 28 Oct 2007 at 3:49 pm Jeremy Wilson

The OP should pick up an art book or go to a museum occasionally. Please make sure they get that message, thanks.

  17. on 03 Nov 2007 at 9:37 pm jenny

this needs to be taken down. it lowers the credibility of this site immensely.

  18. on 08 Nov 2007 at 2:40 pm Al

Agreed. Stupid ass post, I read on thinking there was some kinda joke attached, it seems the post is the joke.

  19. on 08 Nov 2007 at 2:41 pm Al

Ooops, I’m the joke, just read the YTWWN line beneath the title.

    Kick me.

    haha

  21. on 23 Nov 2007 at 3:11 am Me

I am also in awe at the general ignorance here, if this is not a joke, it’s painful =/

  22. on 05 Dec 2007 at 9:37 pm o

    The both ripoff Piet Mondrian.

  23. on 15 Dec 2007 at 11:08 am Idetrorce

very interesting, but I don’t agree with you

  24. on 18 Dec 2007 at 3:52 am sophomoric

i dont get what u guys think is so funny about this just cuz this guy Mondrian ripped off Herring means the post should be deleted?

    Morans!

  25. on 18 Dec 2007 at 8:23 am Steph

Come on, Mondrian’s work is so well known it’s like public domain anyway. I don’t think they are both ripoffs, instead I think they are explicit tributes (or at least references) to Mondrian. Nice site btw.

  26. on 18 Dec 2007 at 11:33 pm ac slater

After reading the post I was thinking… WTH? Then I started reading the comments and realized I wasn’t messed up thinking it was the dumbest post I’ve seen yet. Mommy and daddy need to take someone’s video games away for a while and make them read a book.

  27. on 20 Dec 2007 at 4:57 am Ada

Are you daft? even my brother with a Mathematics degree knows it is Piet MONDRIAN.

  28. on 11 Jan 2008 at 1:01 pm headead

    this is not a rip.

  29. on 14 Jan 2008 at 1:02 pm pbb

personally. i think they both ripped off the partridge family tour bus

  30. on 14 Jan 2008 at 7:39 pm Julia

i dont think theyre copying, neoplasticism is for everyone! i study architecture and i had to make this paintings too, all based on neoplasticism rules and ideas!
    open your minds. people

  31. on 13 Feb 2008 at 7:07 am jeni

I was going to ask why this hasn’t been removed until I noticed the “this will only remain here for entertainment value” disclaimer. Hahaha, entertained. I’m a huge fan of Mondrian’s work.

  32. on 22 Feb 2008 at 9:19 am Iain

    Read this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Stijl

Both pieces borrow from the De Stijl tradition. Neither are really ripoffs.

  33. on 27 May 2008 at 1:46 am Thalia

Hey Sophomoric, get your facts straight before you comment. How could Mondrian rip off Herring when Mondrian DIED in 1944 and Herring’s work was released in 2000? Notice any clue there?

  34. on 05 Jun 2008 at 3:32 am Syd Barrett is alive

The art cover (Silverchair) could be much better, but the albums is very good, I like the way the band changed, they’re wise now (and even more cultured) and have a lot influence of baroque stuff.

Well, people are not olbiged to know about everything, it’s not common to see/hear people mentioning about Mondrian here where I live (it’s a third world country), I agree that the person responsable for the post should be more aware and should have looked for more information before pointing his/her finger.

PS: Sorry about my english, it’s not my first language, my dominant language will always be portuguese.

  35. on 06 Jun 2008 at 2:38 am Syd Barrett is alive

    obliged*

  36. on 25 Apr 2009 at 5:58 pm roxane

then it must mean both of them ripped off the white stripes album ‘de stijl’ cover..
    seriously, this is too funny.

  37. on 12 May 2010 at 3:26 am gerald
