Forever 21 Rips ZOO YORK clothing?
October 28th, 2007 by deathtoprint
My sister had a Zoo York Bag she purchased at a Pacific sunwear in a local mall that was a pretty nice “Doodle” design for a female messenger bag. She was then at a “Forever 21″ Store, when she saw a duffel bag with the same exact print, except instead of “I Heart NY” It says “I Love LA” … WTF. Same pattern, but a different city. It’s all the same doodles … just check the photos.
Here is the original Link to the Pacific Sunwear ZOO YORK Messenger Bag.
And here is the Forever 21 Ripoff Duffel Bag:

How do you know Forever 21 ripped ZooYork and not the other way around?
I don’t actually know for a fact, which is why I’m changing the title to Forever 21 Rips Zoo York? with a question mark.
my bad.
it’s just my guess that ZOO YORK would have had the design first, since my sister purchased the bag two months or so ago, and now currently, Forever 21 sells a similar bag, w/ the exact same fabric, just a slightly different pattern design.
ZOO YORK’s product quality is much higher than Forever 21 (also Wet Seal and Gadzooks) so, im not sure.
That’s why I put it up here for debate.
This probably has less to do with Forever 21 and more to do with who they got the fabric from/.
Eh. Two different bags…SIMILAR fabrics…
I got a tank at Wal-Mart and the next year they had the EXACT SAME shirt at Aeropostale, only twice as much. What is THAT about?
I believe the same about the fabric. It could be who they got it from. Who knows… but.. kind of weird. Look at the price difference. Almost half the price.
I was also going to say that perhaps they simply used the same fabric from a common supplier, but if you look at the Zoo York bag, you’ll see that their bag has the ZY logo in the pattern, so it’s custom fabric.
Someone ripped someone.
That is pretty shit but then again I used to work for quite a well known designer clothing outlet and the designer claims to design everything originally blah blah anyway people used to come walking in off the street all the time with exactly the same clothes we were selling that they just happened to pick up at various other stores (here in NZ and overseas) and for like 1/10th of the price, same buttons, everything (and all a few seasons before what we were selling). I think this sort of thing happens a lot more often then we think, maybe they have the same suppliers or something along those lines and said something like ‘oh well we want that but with this instead’ or whatever…?
If you look carefully, you’ll notice that these are two distinctly different patterns with the main similarity being the fabric treatment and color pallate of the print. This isn’t new btw. In fact, you could start a whole ‘nother blog just on Forever 21 or every clothing company that exists.
It’s lazy (their product development teams definitely scooped it up on a shopping trip -it’s no real secret that this is how it gets done), but it works.
Like it or not, Forever 21’s customers might not be Pac Sun’s customer, but still might be interested in the item if it was presented in an environment that appeals to them.
Couple that with a lower sticker price out the door, and you have a legion of fashion savvy and price conscious customers that don’t really care about Zoo York, their textile designer or the bag itself that they will undoubtedly replace.
Who do you blame: the dopeman or the addict?
Is anyone going to try to go after Zoo York for drawing inspiration from the Yankees or the Mets for their logo? Probably not…
RIP Harold & Justin Pierce
basic hipster pattern. not a direct rip.
i actually did the design as a freelance job for zooyork. forever 21 defenetly ripped my design. the funny thing is, that they didn’t even try to change it at all… i actually did these doodles with a sewing machine, to get this naiv drawing touch. if anyone needs the proof i got the doodles sewed on paper at home. i appreciate, that they liked my design, but it would’ve been smarter to change it a lil more.
Julio Rolle
They did rip your shit. what a shame.
i agree with TM. the bags are similar, but comepletely different types of imagery. thousands of different clothes get replicated, but slightly altered just like shoes, watches, toasters, cameras, laptops, etc. it doesn’t really matter considering the state of our world. debating handbag designs seems almost too fashionista…oh well, i was bored
Julio, I peeped your site, and I must say, your work you did for zoo york (as well as all your other design work) is simply Magnificent. wait, not simple, but simply magnificent. great work.
love your style. what’s funny, is my girlfriend also owns the white tank top with the throwies and the blue and orange ink. Hah, and i love it too, because it took me weeks to notice all the different tags and handstyles in the repeat.
sickness. sickness.
Foever21 has about 20 lawsuits pending just this month due to the FACT that their business plan is based on knocking off what is currently the hot thing and getting it in their stores within days and weeks of it becoming the trend. I have met many of their buyers due to the fact that they ask me for a linesheet at trade shows. I laugh and say why whould I give you my linesheet. You guys knock everyone off. I saw 2 foever21 buyers leaving a showroom in Los Angles with over 100 catalogs and linesheets of other designers.( mine incluede) There is this thing called karma and it all comes back to you. The buyers didn’t look like happy people.
Forever 21 ripped off some designs from NY based men’s wear line BBlessing recently as well.
It can pretty much be stated as fact that Forever 21 probably does not come up with anything original in any part of their line. This is common practice for a lot of the mass market mall outlet shops. Either direct rips, or watered down versions.
Haha. They are both made in the same Chinese Factory. I hope your sister felt her sense of worth by buying overpriced crap with ZooYork printed on it.
I love it when stuff like this happens! YES!!
zoo york is owned by marc ecko enterprises.

This pattern was a freelance request designed about 2 years ago by a talented designer from Berlin named Julio Rölle: http://www.myspace.com/44flavours
The art is 100% original and the freelancer got paid… Forever 21 knock it off with some of our inside jokes….
ZOO CREW
People get a life who really gives a shit? Geez.
is that your sister on the first pic?
I remember the first time I shopped at Forever21 I loved it!
I was like, “Oh wow, this is like stuff I’ve seen at expensive stores except cheaper!”
Well, guess what… you get what you pay for.
Their clothes are made so cheap that they practically fall apart after a few washes.
This is just one more reason not to shop there I guess (not that I needed another).
Well,,, If you readers don’t know forever 21 is known for ripping off high fashion clothing. They have been in over 200+ law suits forever 21 ALWAYS settles of court with a pay off, However they are in a BIG law suit now with Trovata and the judge is taking in all the previous law suits against forever 21. Im sorry to say but forever 21 is a rip off of REAL designers and I think they are about to get what is coming to them. Its not far that designers spend hours and hours designing a clothing line and forever 21 comes a long and copies them for a cheaper price. It’s a shame that there is business people like that out there that still other peoples ideas. In my eyes Forever 21 needs to be shut down or design their own clothing cuzzzz ripping others off is NOT COOL!!!!! Even though they do sell it for much cheaper its still not far.
They ripped off Soundgirl as well- the thing is that it flies off the shelves at forever 21 so fast- it’s hard to catch up. knocking off the knock offs- jerks.
