I am a Communication Design student
at Emily Carr Institute, Vancouver, Canada.

A classmate presented me with an
interesting poster the other week.
On the table he put something
that looked suspiciously similar
to the 2006 Emily Carr Halloween
poster that I was part of making,
but with different copy and different logo.

It turns out it was someone at UBC (University of British Columbia),
one of the top rated universities in Canada,
that thought it was a good idea to simply
take the design from the same type of institution,
for the same kind of event, and from the same
city(!) and simply change the text.
They must have been busy because they
were to stressed to send a mail to us
about it!

The Emily Carr event was a non-profit event.
There was no entrance fee.
The volunteers involved did not receive any pay.

The UBC event charges $5 for tickets, plus
they pay their graphic designers!

I guess we should feel very flattered.
If only they hadn’t done such a crummy job in
reprinting it. Just look at the jagged pixels.
Geez.

Open letter to the UBC Alma Mater.

Absolutely shameful! Thanks for catching this.

Reminds me of a line I used to hear University students say when I was in College myself:
“University students are much smarter than College students.
    Ask any University student.”

Yeah this is pretty brutal. Funny how after I saw this on Jeffs site I came right here only to find you, Tobias, having already posted it. HI TOBIAS!
