An oldie, but a goodie..

Not the newest story, but one I always enjoyed. Now before you jump down my throat, I have done my research. Sony owns the rights to both Spidey, and PS3, so their not ripping off anyone but themselves here. In fact, in an interview, Teiyu Goto, the designer behind the new font, was actually told by Mr. President Ken Kutaragi to use the same font.

“If you really look at the PS3 contour carefully, it is rounded when viewing the console in profile. Rather than creating a typography with all the risks that entails, it was wiser to use the one from Spider-Man, for which Sony has the rights.

“It was also the wish of President Kutaragi, who insisted that I use this typography. In fact, the logo was one of the first elements he decided on and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the shape of PS3.”

Just a lame unoriginal in the end. You’d think the president would want something different, as opposed to everyone associating the PS3 logo with spiderman. Whatever floats your boat Ken.

Interesting to see that the old Xbox logo uses the same font too (thou not italic) I think it’s called mata? Yep. it is.

-I’m not trying to bag on you, but those are fairly dissimilar. But for the common “M” character and similar shape of the parts of a few of the characters, they are pretty different fonts. Just my opinion as an everyday designer type.

Not only is that a hidious example of type design, and the Playstation 3 a grotesque example of product design, but the recycling of an old font is pure laziness.

And since when did company presidents (job: direction on a very abstract level) decide what typeface qualified, experienced, and probably usually very talented designers use?

i agree – both logos suck. however, this isn’t quite a rip-off. the spider-man pcitures were produced by sony the makers of the playstations. the whole spider-man movie enterprise was designed to be in grand synergy with sony’s many product and services. so this isn’t so much a rip as a grand scheme for your money. tootle-lou~
