Alyssa Zukas Star T-Shirt Rip-Off

There have been loads of copycats since this series of admittedly simplistic t-shirt designs, created by Alyssa Zukas, first appeared at Urban Outfitters in 2007. Most of the biters were clever enough to change things a bit, but not this time:

They even had the nerve to use the original Urban Outfitters product photography, AND Alyssa's name, all over their site. The original tees have "Alyssa Zukas" and a bio screenprinted into the inner neck tag area, along with Urban's made-up store brand "Spark in the Dark." The oh-so-clever counterfeiters actually re-typeset everything, changed the name to "Lovely Kate," and retained Urban's "Spark in the Dark" logo in the exact same location. You'd think they were counterfeiting Louis Vuitton bags or something with this level of detail, not Urban t-shirts.

In case the aforementioned link gets altered in any way, here's a comparison.

Nice of the ripper-offers to give Alyssa credit and all, but this was not an authorized situation, and Urban Outfitters was not granted permission to relicense the design to any third party. Straight up rip-off, through and through.

  1. Original in the ’80s, maybe.

  2. Well, I’d say if they’re using your name you have a perfect case for a lawsuit. Get yourself a lawyer and get paid!

  3. Are you kidding me?

I would think it’s pretty embarassing to call attention to yourself showcasing THIS as your “original” design.

    Stars and Hearts with stripes?

Please, if anything, this just calls attention to what a boring and crappy designer you are. If anything, I’d be glad this crap made it in stores, because honestly, you’re a moron if you’d pay for this type of grade-8-introduction-to-design graphic.

    srsly.

it’s a star with a couple freakin’ stripes.
it’s not awesome, it’s not super-original, and it’s not even good-looking, who the hell cares?

Honestly, this stupid “design” is so simple, I’m sure anyone wanting to create a tshirt using the elements ‘star’ and ‘stripes’ would have scrapped this on their first page of sketches…

    This is NOT original.

  4. Fuck off, try selling your designs to outlets that sell t-shirts that actual real fucking women rather twat-faced stick-insects can wear.

  5. iv seen that heart tee at sportsgirl is it urs?
