elmondo.es steals my fanart!!!

elmondo takes my fan art!!!

Elmondo used a fan art pic i drew a while back and posted on my deviant art gallery, they took it without permission and posted it along side one of their news articles, all without adding any line of credit to me the original artist. and as if that wasn't unprofessional enough, they choose not to post my public comments. or answer my many emails.

link to original article...
http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2011/01/13/cultura/1294922146.html

here a link to the original peace and the pencil sketch!

i can understand if you thought is was the real cover, it actually happens alot. but the article is about the translated book, as in with a Spanish cover also, they should have known something was up. and i looked around the site no images have credit not even the writers it seems. but don't ignore my emails hoping it will blow over! I don't understand how according to their wiki they known as the number one source of news on the web in Spain. that bothers me.

  1. They’re not stealing your fanart. This is yet another case of people misusing Google image search. This news site obviously just wanted a cover for “Catcher in the Rye” to go with their story and thought yours was the real deal for some reason. If anything you should be flattered.

  2. like i said they are talking about the spanish title they should have known better. and even if you take stuff off of google, you should still give credit and fact check. go to amazon or any online book store make sure you got the right cover. and nothing excuses them from ignoring my emails after the fact.

if that was the case let them tell me, don’t make excuses for them.

  3. They aren’t talking about the Spanish title; the article is actually about permission being given for a sequel to The Catcher in the Rye. I agree with icruise: this was a mistake, not theft.

  4. the mistake being they took my art… if you take something by mistake and you decide to keep it after i tell you about. and in fact you ignore me completely and act like it never happened it becomes theft. lol

but ok to make you happy “elmondo takes my art by accident… then decides to keep it, ignore me, and are to high and mighty to admit they made a mistake.” which is like saying there was no mistake. there is like saying it was theft.

i not over reacting or being miss leading i stated myself it could have been a mistake… i’ve had this happen a few times before. yes people make the mistake of thinking its the real cover but it’s not. and usually i get an apology, either its taken down or a credit is added. it’s only jack holes that chose to ignore me and theres no excuse for that!

and if you speaking in spanish to a spanish speaking advance about a book thats been translated into spanish way in the hell post the english cover, is what i meant. i wasn’t aware i had to spell it out!

  5. You need to chill you obviously have no clue what you’re talking about, so no need to continue “spelling it out” for us. First of all, it’s not theft as it’s a news story, do you think they’re profiting off of your cover some how? Even if they published the right book cover, there would be no illustrator credit because it doesn’t matter, go try and find a book review or book news story with a picture of a book and illustration caption. Or movie poster with design caption. Doesn’t matter. Secondly, it’s about a Catcher in the Rye SEQUEL – NOT A SPANISH TRANSLATION OF THE BOOK! So the original cover being there makes sense. And now you’re the crazy guy sending a bunch of english emails to a Spanish publication, they probably figure you’re the illustrator of the published cover, demanding credit, which you’ll never receive because illustrators don’t receive captions for book covers in news stories as mentioned previously.

Why are you so mad? Damn.

  6. Not that I really expect ‘news’ purveyors to spend time researching anything anymore, but there are strict rules about Salinger’s covers:

“The only copy allowed on the books, back or front, is the author name and the title. Nothing else at all: no quotes, no cover blurb, no biography. We’re not really sure why this is, but it gives you definite guidelines.”
    — Simon Prosser, publishing director at Hamish Hamilton

  7. To biggie – Illustrators of published books don’t receive credit in newspapers, partly because they publishers pay the illustrator for the license to use the work in promotion.
This may have been a mistake by the newspaper, but they should definitely remove the image after the creator has contacted them. And how on earth could someone do an article in any way relating to Cather in the Rye and not know the original cover? Its a pretty well know image. Seeing as its a web site and not print, it wouldn’t take more than 5 min to swap the picture out for the actual cover. Poor form on the part of Elomundo.

  8. thanks to the guys helping me out!!!

to biggie, my name is willie jimenez, as in i speak spanish. though it might have been in bad spanish, i sent my public comments, and my emails in both english and spanish. and i’m sure since english is the worlds number one language and its a news site that have print editions all over the world, they should also speak english.

you can talk about a sequel with inferring the first, and you since you don’t have any to show early on, you show images of the first. besides whether it’s the first book or the second book they are talking about, they’ll still be wrong by using my art. this book is a classic everyone should at least know the cover.

and i’m not mad it just sounds that way when you read it, since i’m arguing with people on the inter-webs!!! lol or should i say they are agreeing with me, god knows why!

  9. and another thing still not mad! just saying is all, and it’s not like i don’t have a right or reason to be! lol

if i was typing in the title into google in Spanish, there is no way in the world they would have gotten my image. non until now since they posted this article and its been pick up and what not along with the wrong image.

they must have typed the title in english, which was dumb and also prove they speak know english! so they can read my email even if they where just english. but they wasn’t.

and also i’ve worked on covers before… i’ve seen my work and my name on hollywood reporter, tv guide, mtv, and i bunch of others, mostly comic news sites. i think i know a thing or two about when to expect to see my name been given credit and when not.

  10. I’m spainsh and I’m ashamed. BTW it doesn’t surprise me. ¿Did you heard about ZARA?

    Sorry dude. :(

  11. no need to be sorry just cause your spanish lol… whats a ZARA?

  12. This is the same issue as with Chris Buzelli’s art piece used as a image for a web article without permission. Westwolf was not credited or contacted the for the use. Unfortunately, if an artists doesn’t copyright their work before uploading onto the net nothing constructive can be done.

  13. stop crying about your shitty fan-art, nobody would have seen it otherwise

  14. It’s “El Mundo”, not “El Mondo”.

  15. What else can you expec from mr. Pedro J.!
